I met Manuel today while I was biking through San Francisco. A man who looked just as disheveled pointed to Manuel and said, “That dude just got cancer.” This was the first time I’ve met a homeless man asking for help for someone else instead of himself. Moved by the stranger’s concern, I asked Manuel if he was hungry. In broken English, he said “Yes, have a nice weekend.” Pointing to a nearby fast food joint, I asked what he wanted. He just shrugged and said he’ll wait.
This is the look on his face after he received two tacos and a soda. I never found out if he really did have cancer, but I feel like today it didn’t really matter.

After finishing most of this semester’s finals, I was able to spend the last ten days exploring the city with Flore from Avignon, France. (side note: she’s got a band. check them out!)
Our adventures included Dolores Park, Bi-Rite, Musee Mechanique, Cafe duNord to watch this guy Cass McCombs, the Golden Gate Theatre, some bar on Larkin, lanterns at the Pier, crepes at Genki, pizza at Giorgio’s, this place called End Up, this sweet spot called Delirium in the Mission, and finally one last brunch at Golden Coffee.
So basically it’s been a week of walking, eating, playing music, watching movies, eating, taking pictures, drinking, and more eating. It’s been awhile since I’ve really spent time exploring San Francisco, and truthfully, I feel like I’ve grown to appreciate the city a whole lot more.
After devouring one last stack of beloved pancakes, Flore hopped on the BART to SFO this morning to fly back to France. Even in such a short span of time, after the miles and miles we’ve walked, the tipsy butchery of her native tongue, and nearly burning down a tree with fire lanterns, one can’t help but feel kinda bummed going back to the daily routine. But then again, while the week did come to an end, memories don’t.
In other news, summer break starts in a week. And I am excited.

Today’s just been a marathon of good things.
Been hanging out with Flore from France, and we started the day with brunch at a coffee shop just two blocks from my place. I didn’t even know it existed, but I now know where I can find good hash browns nearby.
Then (re)watched (500) Days of Summer before heading out to Lighting class where we just shot our finals. Went pretty smoothly, I’d say.
After dinner at Boudin, Flore and I flew some fire lanterns by the pier. After initially struggling against the wind, we got it to work. Wow, those things float up pretty far!
Then finally, we ended the night with a trip to Genki where you could probably find the best crepes in the city.
Oh, and I just downloaded Mayer Hawthorne’s great new EP. (for free!)
